Rhino's Story by Amanda
My baby was born may 16th 2011. So he's not even 2 yrs old yet. He was diagnosed with nonepitheliortropic lymphosarcoma on Feb. 8th 2013. (although it could also be histiocytic sarcoma) both are an extremely rare form of cancer. The university who did his testing had only seen 1 other case of it ever. It started with just one hard lump on his back. Which started getting bigger slowly. About a month went by and he had developed 2 more on his side and back. We took him into our vet and they gave him antibiotics to try first. They continued to grow bigger and multiply daily/weekly. Eventually they started growing on top of each other and in a circular pattern. One lump next to another small lump, next to another. All the way around in a circle. Only some of his lumps were doing this. Others were remaining one large lump that continued to grow. About 1 1/2 months into different meds and monitoring. (we didn't notice the 1st lump growing until about it was about 3 weeks old) we had the histopathology and cytology testing done. They also removed a section of tissue for testing. About 10 days later (Feb. 8th) we took him back to vet for the removal of his sutures when we were told the results of his tests. It really shocked me to find out his form of cancer was so rare. I knew inside he had a form of cancer before the results came in. But I just was hopeing I was wrong. The vet told me to be prepared just incase. But nothing could've prepared me for the news the vet was telling me. So now we will be starting a month supply of prednisone. And if we can find the funds he will be going for weekly cbc testing to count his white blood cells. And based on those results will determine how often he has to have the chemo drugs. Should be every 4-6 weeks. The survival rate, and treatment effectiveness is not known due its rarity. I hope the treatments work and I can find the funds to help him to the best of my ability so he can return to his goofy self! He likes to lay on his back and sleep, being held like a baby!! And chasing our family dog! :)
